Tim Walz Motorcade Wreck: What We Know

Several press vans traveling with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s motorcade were involved in a crash on Monday as the Democratic vice presidential nominee headed to a campaign stop in Milwaukee.
According to reports from some pool reporters traveling with Walz’s team, members of the press and some campaign staffers were evaluated by medical personnel after the vans got into a crash in Milwaukee County. WISN political director Matt Smith reported on X, formerly Twitter, that the motorcade was heading to Milwaukee Area Labor Council’s “Laborfest,” where Walz is expected to speak this afternoon.
Smith reported that the motorcade carrying Walz and Wisconsin Representative Gwen Moore were “still en route” but shared videos of several white vans, including one marked with a sign that read “Press 1,” stopped on the side of the interstate following the crash.
New York Times reporter Jazmine Ulloa said the crash occurred just before 1 p.m. CDT and that a staff member in her press van “appeared to have a sprained or broken arm and is being treated by medics. Everyone else is shaken but appears to be in okay condition.”
A spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign said that the crash occurred toward the rear of the motorcade, while Walz was riding in a car closer to the front. The spokesperson added that Harris spoke with Walz shortly after the crash and that the governor was not injured, per a report from the Associated Press.
Ulloa said in a following report to X that pool reporters and campaign staff had been loaded into new vans around 1:50 p.m. CDT. Walz was scheduled to address the “Laborfest” crowd at 2 p.m. local time and will be joined by his wife, Gwen, and Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin.
“We are still unclear on what caused the crash,” Ulloa added.
Newsweek has reached out to Walz’s team via email for additional information.
Monday marks Walz’s third campaign stop in Wisconsin since being chosen as Harris’ running mate. Democrats have made considered inroads in the critical battleground state since Harris took over at the top of the ticket, although the race remains tight between the vice president and former President Donald Trump.
Harris spent the Labor Day holiday campaigning with union leaders in Michigan and Pennsylvania. President Joe Biden is scheduled to join his running mate in Pittsburgh during the city’s Labor Day parade.
